Love it or hate it. Hate it or love it. Marmite is famously divisive. However, taste preferences aside, The Trading Post have had a long relationship with the brown, sticky, umami-rich paste. Experience shows that the British hold Marmite in very high esteem - at least those who don't despite it - and it has been one of our most enduring sellers over our twenty years in business. If we ever run out, it's never long before we're being told about it...
Marmite definitely holds a special place in the larders of many British people. Perhaps it is not treated with the same national reverence as Vegemite in Australia, but Marmite certainly has a passionate (perhaps even fervent) following. Whilst the internet assures me that there is nothing "chemically addictive" about Marmite, the presence of umami flavours and salt can give the brain a sensory 'reward' and, furthermore, a University of York study has suggested that a tablespoon of Marmite every day triggers neurotransmitters in the brain which can promote a sense of calm and groundedness.
In November, The Trading Post are giving away jars of Marmite in every one of their prize hampers. This will delight some people. For the others, they might be surprised at its versatility; added to stews, ragus and even curries, it can provide a depth of flavour that's hard to beat.
