The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is the largest and most-long-standing fundraising event of its kind in the UK. Started in 1990 by a local fundraising committee, the occasion is now honoured by thousands of people in Great Britain and beyond, raising vital funds to help Macmillan to support people living with cancer. The official 2022 date (when the vast majority of coffee-morning activities occur) is Friday 30th September, which gives you plenty of time to plan, prepare, invite, advertise, bake, brew and raise money for a very worthwhile charity. Even if you just have a cup of coffee at home, perhaps with a buttered scone (see recipe below), before donating online, there are many ways to get involved and support a very good cause.
So whether you want to arrange a local coffee morning for friends, family, co-workers or the local community, here is a simple recipe for delicious scones from our Facebook archive…
Ingredients (you will need): 225g self-raising flour, pinch of salt, 55g butter, 150ml milk & EITHER 25g grated mature cheddar OR 25g caster sugar. Also, if you do choose the sugar (sweet) option, you can chuck in a handful of sultanas, but they are purely an option.
Technique: Preheat oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7 & lightly grease a baking tray. Sift flour & salt together, then rub in the butter. Stir in the sugar/cheese then the milk to make a soft dough. Turn on to a floured work surface and knead very lightly. Pat out to a round 2cm thick. Use a 5cm cutter to stamp out rounds and place on the baking tray. Repeat to use up all of the dough. Brush the tops of the scones with a little milk. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until well risen and golden-brown. Cool on a wire rack. Serve in the manner customary to your people.
So, mark Friday 30th September in your diary so you are adequately prepared to drink coffee (or tea), eat treats and donate to MacMillan Cancer Support.
