20 Years of Iconic Brands: Yorkshire Tea

20 Years of Iconic Brands: Yorkshire Tea

Yorkshire Tea is the market leader in black tea sales in the UK but, more than that, it holds a special place in the hearts of many British tea drinkers. Some would even suggest it has an almost cult-like following, with many of The Trading Post's customers professing that they "won't drink anything else."

The Trading Post have been importing British tea since the beginning and, with a large number of British people in the workforce, consider themselves truely seasoned purveyors of a proper British brew. Recognising that it can often be difficult to get a real cuppa in France, The Trading Post have been supplying some of the biggest UK brands to expats, holidaymakers and tea aficionados for as long as any of us can remember.

In this time we have learned a lot (possibly too much) about the British tea drinker. One thing that comes up repeatedly is the tribalism that comes with different tea brands; PG Tips, Typhoo and Tetley all have strong fanbases, but there is something about Yorkshire Tea that makes many of its drinkers truly fanatical. It is perhaps slightly hyperbolic, but some people practically deny the validity of any other tea that is not Yorkshire Tea. It's like Highlander for hot beverages.

Some people might see this commitment to the singular perfection of Yorkshire tea as an unwillingness to accept unnecessary compromise, some might see it as short-sightedness. But where does it come from? Why is Yorkshire tea so loved, and why is this love so often monomaniacal? Perhaps it originates, like the blend of tea itself, from Yorkshire. Whilst undeniably one of many regions that comprises England (and thus an even smaller part of the UK), Yorkshire is consider by many of its inhabitants as "God's Own Country," itself extraordinarily special and distinct - even from its closest neighbours. Yorkshire is thought of as more than a region, more than a county and perhaps even more than a separate country. Yorkshire is incomparable, so it makes sense that Yorkshire Tea is similarly inimitable.

As part of The Trading Post's 20th anniversary celebrations, we are giving away boxes of Yorkshire tea as part of our daily prize giveaway throughout November 2026. One lucky winner receives a package of amazing British and International goods every day of the month. We will be discussing the iconic brands found in each of these hampers every day. One thing can be sure, however, that whilst the box of Yorkshire Tea in each prize will be surrounded by other amazing products, for many the Yorkshire Tea will always be primus inter pares - the first among equals.
