• Possibly named after the North-American archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddle the US-Canada border in the Saint Lawrence River, Thousand Island is a mayonnaise-based salad dressing with flavours of tomato and roasted red pepper. Similar to a Marie Rose sauce, Thousand Island dressing is equally well-suited to a traditional prawn cocktail starter and is a great addition to a classic American grilled Reuben sandwich. With its flavours of both tomato and mayo, variations on 1000 island are often served as 'special sauce' in chip shops, burger joints and most major fast-food outlets.
